Ranger Service: Wild at heart, healthy parks

The Ranger Service has changed

The Birmingham Ranger Service has launched a two-year project in partnership with Public Health: 'Wild at heart, healthy parks'.

In alignment with Our City of Nature Plan, the service is concentrating its actions on the following wards:

  • Aston
  • Balsall Heath West
  • Balsall Heath East
  • Bordesley and Highgate
  • Castle Vale
  • Gravelly Hill
  • Heartlands
  • Nechells
  • Newtown
  • Pype Hayes
  • Sparkbrook

Community activities will continue to be offered in these priority wards.

With this initiative, we want to increase park use, participation, volunteering, and interest in our green spaces across 46 nominated park sites.

Why only a few wards

The City of Nature Plan assessed green spaces across the city, ranking them based on their availability in each ward, their quality, the ecosystem offered, and other relevant measures. Based on this information, we introduced the Fair Park standard, which is widely met across other city areas.

Following the Fair Park standard, these wards were chosen because they have the least amount of green space in the city.

We aim to elevate the 46 nominated parks to meet this Fair Park standard.

Local business

If you are a business located in one of the 11 priority wards and would like to help the community as part of a corporate social responsibility activity, we can help.

We will connect you with one of the 46 parks and help organise a corporate volunteering day for you and your staff.

School sessions and activities

We offer free study sessions and activities for schools in priority wards at the following parks:

  • Sutton Park
  • Sheldon Country Park
  • and Lickey Hills Country Park

For a full day experience, Sheldon Country Park and Lickey Hills Country Park also offer free rooms for schools from these areas.

Contact the ranger hubs for more information.
